Cayucos, California
In 2016, the Cayucos Veteran’s Hall was deemed structurally unsafe and not in compliance with California Coastal Commission requirements. Plans were developed to rehabilitate the structure while restoring historic elements. The project scope involved the removal of non-historic additions and rehabilitation of the original warehouse, salvaging original historical materials for reapplication, construction of a new foundation 2.5 feet higher than the previous foundation to accommodate potential sea-level rise, installation of new steel framing, construction of a new addition to house an art gallery, historical museum and kitchen, renovating the patio and adjacent picnic areas, and constructing new ADA compliant exterior decking and boardwalk to provide access to the beach and pier.
Earth Systems provided geotechnical engineering reports during the design phase of the project. For construction, we were retained to provide geotechnical consultation and soil special inspection services, continuing our role as the Geotechnical Engineer of Record.
Earth Systems provided observation and soil compaction testing during grading and placement of fill and backfill; observation/inspection of drilling, and reinforcement and concrete placement for cast-in-place caissons and sampling/testing of concrete; observation of driven wood pile installation; site visits as needed by a Registered Geotechnical Engineer during earthwork, deep foundation and conventional foundation installation; inspection of reinforcement and concrete placement for structural elements, including sampling/testing of concrete; inspection of post-installed anchors; inspection of structural steel fabrication and field placement; and inspection of wood shear wall nailing.
