East Boronda Road Widening

City of Salinas
Salinas, California

Project Scope

This project consisted of the widening of East Boronda Road in Salinas, California.  The project entailed adding two lanes to the northern edge of the existing roadway, improvements of street intersections, a landscaped median with stormwater management facilities, stormwater retention features north of the roadway, an agricultural water ditch, multiuse bike/pedestrian trail, and a new bridge or culvert extension across Gabilan Creek.

Testing and Inspection

Earth Systems was retained to provide an evaluation of pavement and develop geotechnical recommendations. The field investigation involved a site reconnaissance, subsurface exploration, infiltration testing, laboratory testing of selected soil samples, geotechnical assessment of data, and preparation of a geotechnical report to provide a basis for development of project plans and specifications.

Geotechnical Investigation

Earth Systems’ geotechnical report provided an assessment of site suitability for the proposed improvements, and geotechnical design criteria for site preparation and grading, pavement design sections including hot mix asphalt, PCC pavement, grind and overlay rehabilitation, bridge foundations, and site drainage. The report contained a discussion of the infiltration test methodology used, the test results, and recommended measures for increasing the lateral stability of curbs and pavement longevity in areas adjacent to infiltration features.
