Project Summary

The Avila Beach Drive at US 101 Operational Improvement (Roundabout) Project was designed to replace an existing two-way stop controlled US Highway 101 southbound ramp intersection at Avila Beach Drive/Shell Beach Road.

The project incorporated:

  • Single-lane roundabout at the off-ramp
  • Park and ride lot and transit stops to serve the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) and Avila Trolley
  • Traffic calming features
  • Improvements to multimodal access and safety

Construction Phase

Earth Systems’ scope included:

  • Soils and materials quality assurance testing for roadway excavations
  • Trench backfill
  • Structure backfill
  • Hot mix asphalt
  • Concrete
  • Shotcrete
  • Rebar
  • Testing associated with modifications of the existing water distribution line

Associated Improvements

  • Numerous soil nail and other types of retaining structures ranging from 3 feet to approximately 22 feet in height
  • Lighting infrastructure
  • Stormwater control features
  • Relocation of existing water distribution line
