Surfer's Point Managed Retreat and Restoration

City of Ventura
Ventura, California

Project Summary

The project has involved the restoration of the shoreline at Surfer’s Point in Ventura, California to enhance safety for beachgoers and preserve the shoreline from further erosion by removing and relocating an existing multi-use path and the construction of a buried “cobble mattress” and sand berm between the multi-use path and the Pacific Ocean. Additional project elements include widening Shoreline Drive to allow for street parking and construction of new asphalt parking lots, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, storm drains, lighting, and drainage infrastructure.

Scope of Work

Earth Systems was retained to prepare an update to the original geotechnical engineering report. The scope of services included field exploration and laboratory testing, with the objective of further evaluating the soil and geologic conditions at the site to provide appropriate geotechnical design parameters.

During grading operations, our team has performed:

  • Field observations of engineered fill placement

  • Geotechnical membrane placement and associated aggregate installation

  • Relative compaction testing

Additional materials testing and special inspection services provided by Earth Systems included:

  • Utility trench backfill testing

  • Laboratory testing on samples of the subgrade and fill soils

  • Engineering review and consultation
