Project Summary

The Robert E. Kennedy Library located on the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus was built in 1980. By 2022, the library was in need of major upgrades. Following receipt of project funding from the State of California in 2022, the renovation of the 40+ year old library was set in motion to provide new and improved study spaces and amenities, including:

  • New main circulation staircase
  • New fire sprinklers & fire alarm system throughout
  • Seismic upgrades, structural strengthening
  • New paint, carpet, ceilings throughout
  • Courtyard updates
  • New Café at Level 1
  • New HVAC with cooling throughout building
  • New exterior glazing with added insulation
  • Roof replacement with added insulation
  • New LED lighting throughout
  • Improved wireless access points at Level 1
  • New all-gender and ADA restrooms on every floor
  • New classrooms

Geotechnical Engineering

Other aspects of the project included seismic strengthening and new foundations for select structural elements.

During the design phase of the project, Earth Systems’ scope of work consisted of a geotechnical engineering investigation and a geologic hazards report for the initial three buildings to be constructed.
