Project Summary

Earth Systems’ team drilled six exploratory borings through holes cored in the basement’s concrete slab. As the borings were drilled, soil samples were collected and Standard Penetration Tests were performed. Soils encountered in the borings were categorized, logged, and taken to our full-service materials testing laboratory for testing. From the data obtained from the field and laboratory programs, we were able to develop geotechnical criteria and provided recommendations for micropile foundations and shallow foundations.

Special Inspection

As the work continued during the structural retrofit, Earth Systems provided special inspections and testing for:

  • Concrete reinforcing steel
  • Concrete/Shotcrete placement
  • Epoxied rebar dowel installation and pull testing
  • Shop welding
  • Field welding
  • Roof nailing/strapping and membrane

Project History

The Anderson Hotel in Downtown San Luis Obispo once served as a landing place for celebrities on their way to visit Hearst Castle in the early 1920s. The historic five-story cast-in-place concrete structure, the tallest in San Luis Obispo, hosted some of Old Hollywood’s most notorious, including Clark Gable and Marlene Dietrich.

In 1978, after decades of operating the building as a hotel, the Anderson family entered into a Section 8 rental assistance contract with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and converted the building into affordable housing for seniors and special needs individuals. Since then, it has been providing critical supportive housing for San Luis Obispo’s most vulnerable citizens.
