Westpark Skatepark

City of Ventura
Ventura, California

Project Summary

For years, the Ventura skateboarding community had been vocal about the need for improvements to Westpark Skatepark. It had long been listed as a Capital Improvement Project for the City of Ventura’s Parks and Recreation Department. Finally, in 2019 after significant public outreach, the decision was reached to apply for grant funding for the skatepark’s expansion and renovation from the California Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program, a program which creates new parks and new recreation opportunities in California’s underserved communities. A grant totaling $1,990,000 was secured and the transformation of Westpark Skatepark from a 3,200 sq. ft. skatepark and into a 22,000 sq. ft. top notch facility went from dream to reality. It is Ventura’s first multi-level public skatepark and has fulfilled a critical community request that has been 25 years in the making.

Geotechnical Engineering and Materials Testing

Earth Systems conducted the geotechnical engineering study that was used as a basis for the skatepark’s design. Our team conducted subsurface exploration, infiltration testing, field and laboratory testing on soil samples obtained to analyze the soil conditions at the project site and provide geotechnical recommendations for design and construction. Following the completion of the geotechnical engineering study, Earth Systems continued to provide geotechnical services for the project’s other design professionals.

During construction, our team has been performing:

  • Compaction Testing
  • Laboratory Testing
  • Grading Observations
  • Inspection of Engineered Fill
  • Concrete and Shotcrete Testing
  • Inspection of Reinforced Steel Placement
  • Field Welding Inspection
