The Cultural and Performing Arts Center, Cuesta Community College at the main San Luis Obispo campus features a state-of-the-art sound system, a 450-seat conventional theater, 100-seat black box experimental theater, dance studio, costume design lab and set construction facility.

The theater structure is of masonry construction with spans of 70 feet in the seating area, and wall heights from 30 to 65 feet. Steel columns embedded in the masonry walls carry the roof loads. The theatre features multiple levels for the entrance and lobby, theatre seating, orchestra pit, basement, stage, fly loft, scenery shop and construction yard areas. Excavations below existing grade and fill placement were used to accomplish the different levels. Retaining walls were constructed. Stairways, ramps and covered walkways provide access to the CPAC.

Earth Systems conducted a soils engineering investigation, which involved site reconnaissance, subsurface exploration, laboratory testing of selected samples, and geotechnical engineering evaluation of the data collected. We provided geotechnical recommendations for preparation and grading of the site, utility trenches, foundations, slabs-on-grade and exterior flatwork, retaining walls, drainage around improvements, and construction observation and testing. During construction, Earth Systems provided grading, retaining wall, and utility trench backfill certifications, foundation excavations observations, concrete sampling and testing, special inspection of welding, masonry, bolting and structural steel.
