The existing Atherwood Elementary School, comprising multiple one-story structures, parking areas, and playing fields was augmented with several new one-story buildings. Additionally, several portable structures were relocated onto permanent foundations and a new covered walkway was constructed.

Earth Systems conducted a geotechnical engineering investigation for the project which entailed site reconnaissance, subsurface exploration, laboratory analysis of soil samples collected during the exploration, analyses of laboratory data, and conclusions and recommendations related to the site development. Differential ground subsidence due to earthquake shaking was found to be a significant issue. Geotechnical criteria developed included allowable friction bearing capacity, foundation design, total and differential settlement, lateral earth pressures, grading, soil expansion and corrosion characteristics, and pavement section design. The new educational facility structures were completed in 2007.
