Geotechnical Staff Engineer Job Description

Earth Systems provides a wide variety of services including geotechnical engineering, geology and hydrogeology, construction materials testing and inspection, and soils and materials laboratory testing. The Staff Engineer will prepare geotechnical reports, evaluate and compile field/laboratory data, and perform geotechnical calculations for slope stability, lateral earth pressure, foundation capacity, settlements, and deep foundation design. The Staff Engineer will also develop written proposals and estimates and assist in the development of geotechnical design recommendations.

The Staff Engineer will complete engineering analysis for slope stability, liquefaction, settlement, pile and foundation design, and analyze the validity of the findings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and participate in exploration programs and determine appropriate laboratory testing plan.
  • Conduct comprehensive engineering analyses, develop appropriate geotechnical recommendations, and produce detailed engineering reports documenting findings and recommendations.
  • Research applicable codes, regulations, and requirements for projects.
  • Monitor phases on construction projects and prepare progress reports.
  • Assist with reports and project submissions on geotechnical aspects of project.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to read and properly interpret project plans.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and analyses and understand validity of findings.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and local laws, codes and regulations pertinent to Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Knowledge of testing and inspection of construction materials, standards, and codes.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to effectively meet deadlines.
  • Ability to complete tasks with accuracy and with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work with integrity, trust and commitment, as outlined in core competencies.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely; both orally and in writing.
  • Understands AutoCAD and other design software.
  • Understands terminology, methods, practices, and techniques used in technical reports and project preparation.
  • Able to receive and execute the direction of Project Engineers and/or Managers.


  • 1-3 years of experience, preferably with a geotechnical consulting firm.

Education and Licensure

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, with a Geotechnical Engineering concentration required.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Engineer-in-training (EIT) certification preferred.
