Completed in 2010, the Morro Bay Harborwalk is a boardwalk and bike trail connecting the popular Embarcadero to Morro Rock and Morro Strand State Beach. It includes a pedestrian boardwalk, a Class I bikepath, and the realignment and widening of portions of Coleman Drive. Earth Systems provided the geotechnical engineering report for the first phase of the project, whose objectives included providing a continuous network of pedestrian and bike pathways along the waterfront, and improving circulation for both vehicular and non-vehicular traffic. The geotechnical report provided geotechnical criteria for grading, utility trench excavations, the pedestrian boardwalk, retaining walls, and pavement. Challenges included the presence of rock rip-rap at shallow depths in the area near the waterfront and significant underground utilities associated with the Duke Energy power plant.
